Srirangam Festivals
Srirangam Festivals are total of 322 days,. monthly and yearly ceremonies, which commemorate all the Srirangam festivals in the Temple calendar. The most important of these ceremonies, and one of the most famous in Southern India, is that of Vaikuntha Ekadasi, which lasts 21-. days in December and January. Preparations for it begin towards the end of October with the erection of the first pillar (a coconut tree trunk) of the pandal built for the occasion, which has 47 pillars when completed. This panaal is .erected in the north-east court of the third enclosure, before the Hall of a Thousand .Mirrors.
The god is brought there in procession, passing through the northern gate of the second enclosure, which is closed all the year round and opened only on this occasion. The statues of the holy Alvars and Acharyas are brought one by one and set out near the god under the mandapa in the centre of the hall.[ edit ]
Throughout the festival (ten days followed by ten nights) the three thousand lines of sacred texts are recited and chanted in the presence of the god.
Twice a year, in January and April, the god is carried in his processional car in the midst of a great throng of people. In March, a water festival by night (teppam) takes place in the tank outside the srirangam temple to the west of the seventh enclosure. The god and the two goddesses are placed in an illuminated barge and towed to the stone pavilion in the centre of the tank, where they attend puja.
It has been noted above that once a year, in March and April the god proceeds to the srirangam temple of Sri Nachiyar at Woraiyur, to meet his consort. This festival lasts nine days; it comprises several ceremonial prooessions and many rites by day and night, including the royal anointing (abhisheka) and a quarrel between the god and the goddess mimed and sung by two answering groups of priests.
Many other Srirangam festivals are observed which it is not possible to describe here. They all bear witness to the extraordinary vitality of the cult of Vishnu at Srirangam, a centre which has remained to the present day both full of activity and rich in a tradition of.
