Of 365 days a year 322 days are engaged with festivals in Srirangam temple. The most important festival in Hinduism "vaikunda ekadhesi"(attaining the status of no re-birth by residing at the feet of Lord) is celebrated exuberantly for 21 days from December-January (Tamil month: Margazhli–Thai). Preparations and arrangements for this festival will begin in the mid of November by setting the first pillar (a coconut tree trunk) tented by dry coconut leaves and rough clothes. And up to 47 pillars will be set so. This tent is set in the north-east court of the third enclosure, which is in front of the hall of thousand pillars.
Lord Renganathar will be carried on the sacred shoulders of the devotees in procession, and passing through the northern gate of the second enclosure, which is closed all the year and opened only on this occasion. The statues of the Alvars and Acharyas will be carried the same way one by one and placed near the Lord Renganathar under the mandapa in the centre of the hall.[ edit ]
