Tamil Pradosham Viratham (also spelled Pradosha Vratham) is a significant Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is observed on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) phases of the lunar fortnight. "Pradosham" refers to the auspicious period that occurs during the twilight hours of this day, approximately 1.5 hours before and after sunset. This time is considered highly beneficial for worshipping Lord Shiva to remove sins and gain blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual upliftment. Spiritual Cleansing: It is believed that observing this vratham helps to cleanse one's karma and sins. Grace of Shiva: Devotees believe that Lord Shiva is particularly merciful during this time and bestows his blessings readily. Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan): Pradosham is associated with the legend of the Devas and Asuras churning the ocean for amrita (nectar of immortality). When poison (halahala) emerged, Lord Shiva drank it to save the universe. This event symbolizes Shiva's role as a savior and is commemorated during Pradosham. Somavara Pradosham: Pradosham falling on a Monday is highly auspicious and known to remove all forms of doshas (afflictions). Shani Pradosham: Pradosham falling on a Saturday is believed to have special significance in removing karmic debts and ancestral issues. Maha Pradosham: A grand observance of Pradosham that occurs before Maha Shivaratri.
